What is your distinguishing mark as a leader?

by Elaine Cercado

“What is your distinguishing mark as a leader?”

This question is helpful in revisiting role models and auditing our own leadership character.

It led me to reflect on the leaders who have left distinguishing marks in my mind, such as the visionary Singapore leader, Lee Kuan Yew, and Blessed Teresa of Calcutta, who’s known for her humility and selfless service.

Within my professional and family circles, I looked up at my past managers, mentors and models in the family, who have demonstrated innovative thinking, courage, diligence, being people developer & grower, humility, generosity, integrity, wisdom.

They were the leaders who have inspired me with their distinct and admirable characters. Some of them have greatly influenced my own leadership style.

The question has also led me to reflect on my own leadership character. What was/is my distinguishing mark?

Feedback from former direct reports, managers and peers during my corporate stints showed this common thread: “leads with humane touch”, “honest and trustworthy” and “leads her people and business with strong values, good business principles, appreciates diversity and is able to develop the best potential from her team.”

In addition, feedback from some of my training and coaching clients have mentioned that I demonstrated empathy, genuine care, openness, kindness and encouragement.

I felt happy with all the feedback because my inner and outward selves showed harmony, which has been a key factor for my success. By success, I don’t mean great wealth or power. Rather success in terms of realizing fully my gifts and talents, living joyfully and peacefully, and fulfilling my life mission and purpose. Such harmony has helped build my credibility and integrity as a leader, mentor and coach, and has sustained me through the years.

How about you? What is your distinguishing mark as a leader?Who inspired you or influenced you? Why?
