Leadership is an Echo

by Elaine Cercado

I love this quote from N.E.W.S.® Navigation – and what it means and how we can become better leaders when we actualize it.

🌊 “Leadership isn’t just about making decisions—it’s about the ripple effect of those decisions. Every interaction, every choice, every mindset spreads.”

In her book, Change Your Questions, Change Your Life, author Marilee Adams, differentiated the judger and learner mindsets. Great questions are based on the learner mindsets. For example, instead of asking

🗣️ “What’s wrong?” – ask “What works?”
🗣️ “Why bother?” – ask “What’s possible?”
🗣️ “Who’s to blame?” – ask “What am I responsible for?”

Whether we ask with a judger or a learner mindset, it echoes.

As N.E.W.S.® posted: How leaders communicate, support, and challenge their teams doesn’t stop with one conversation—it echoes.

🔊 A leader’s tone sets the culture.
💡 A question asked today shapes how a team thinks tomorrow.
🔥 The way challenges are framed influences whether people feel stuck or inspired to act.

This reminds me about the importance of developing the competencies of empathetic communication and team collaboration.

To engage teams to effectively collaborate and achieve a team goal, leaders need to answer these key questions in the team members’ minds and hearts:

💬 Do I belong in this team? ~ Leaders need to foster a sense of belonging.
💬 Does my team value my skills? Do I get to do what I am good at? ~ Leaders need to align strengths.
💬 Am I engaged? Do I bring passion and commitment to my work and my company? ~ Leaders need to engage employees.

What kind of echo are you creating?
